Flying can be an exciting and stressful experience, especially for first-time flyers. To help you enjoy your first flight and have a smooth journey, here's a checklist with tips and tricks to use in addition to your prayers:

Before the Trip

  • Research and Plan: Research your destination and understand its culture, weather, and local customs. Plan your itinerary and have a rough idea of what you want to do and see.

  • Book Flights Early: Try to book your flights early to get the best deals and seat options.

  • Alerts: Sign up for alerts from all airlines that will get you to your destination.

  • Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance to protect yourself against unexpected events like flight cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost baggage.

  • Travel Documents: Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, including your passport, visa (if required), and any printed flight tickets or boarding passes. Don't rely on digital documents.


  • Pack Smart: Pack essentials in your carry-on, neck pillow, including a change of clothes, important medications, chargers, headphones/earbuds, travel-sized toiletries, snacks and any valuables. Be sure your devices are charged up. Pack gum and/or foam ear plugs [see Ear Pressure]. A jacket/blanket if you get cold easily is also a good idea.


  • Check Baggage Allowance: Familiarize yourself with the airline's baggage policy to avoid unexpected fees or restrictions. Check here when in doubt on what you can bring.


  • Transportation: Arrange your transportation and notify them of delays as soon as possible, if you are not driving yourself. 


  • Practice Run: Many airlines and local airports offer classes for first time or nervous flyers.

At the Airport

  • Arrive Early: Arrive at the airport well in advance to avoid rushing and allow time for check-in and security procedures.

  • Security Check: Familiarize yourself with airport security rules. Follow instructions, remove liquids from your carry-on, and be prepared for the screening process. Activate your faith that you will conquer this first flight and consider signing up for TSA PreCheck to save you additional time and stress!

  • Stay Organized: Keep your travel documents, boarding passes, and identification easily accessible.

  • Stay Hydrated: Bring an empty water bottle to fill up after the security check or purchase water after passing through security.

  • Choose the Right Seat: Consider selecting a window seat for a view or an aisle seat for easier access to the restroom.

  • Ear Pressure: To relieve ear pressure during takeoff and landing, chew gum, yawn, or swallow.

  • Stay Comfortable: Wear comfortable clothing and layers to adjust to changing cabin temperatures.

  • Entertainment: Bring your favorite books, [downloaded] music, movies, or download entertainment apps on your device for in-flight entertainment. Check your airline to determine their in-flight entertainment/wifi options and applicable fees.

  • Snacks: Bring your favorite easy to carry and eat snacks. In-flight snacks/food may be available at an additional fee depending on your airline. If you are on a budget, bring your own!

  • Enjoy the Ride: Bring an open mind. A lack of preparation causes the most stress but you are reading this guide, so you are more than prepared to enjoy your flight!

    Upon Arrival

  • Luggage Pickup: Sign up for airline apps to track your luggage. Also listen to flight attendants for information on where to secure your checked luggage in case of changes.

  • Stay Safe: Be aware of your surroundings and use reputable transportation options when traveling from the airport to your accommodation.

  • Local Currency: Exchange some money at the airport or use a local ATM to have cash on hand for small expenses.

  • Time Zone Adjustment: If you experience jet lag, try to adjust your sleep schedule to the local time as soon as possible.
